OTTAWA, April 2, 2020 — With public health authorities continuing to urge people to avoid mass gatherings in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, we have taken the decision to cancel the Ottawa Regional Science Fair for 2020. The fair would have been held on April 3rd and 4th at Carleton University.
“We have been monitoring the advice from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Ottawa Public Health and it is clear that we must cancel the fair for this year in order to protect our students, sponsors, dedicated volunteers, and our community from further spread of COVID-19.” said Simon McMillian, the Chair of the Ottawa Regional Science Fair. “While this is the first time that the fair will be missed since it began over 50 years ago, our work to support Ottawa’s young innovators will continue and we are already looking ahead to next year’s fair.”
ORSF is proud of all the students who work hard to prepare projects for the fairs held each Spring and we want to continue supporting them through these difficult times. We will be digitally connecting students with mentors in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields who can offer guidance and knowledge that will help students improve their project for next year.
Further updates will be announced as new information warrants.
About the Ottawa Regional Science Fair
The Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) is a registered charity and has been hosting the annual science fair for students in grades 7 through 12 in the Ottawa-Carleton Region for over 50 years. Our mission is to showcase the incredible knowledge and value that young innovators can contribute to their communities. Each year, approximately 300 projects in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are entered into the fair. ORSF supports our students through mentorship programs and, with the generous support of our partners and sponsors, awards cash prizes and the opportunity to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) to the top projects in a number of categories.
